  Public Service Cabinet Secretary  Geoffrey Ruku has called on Human Resource managers across the country to uphold payroll integrity and intensify efforts to eliminate ghost workers and fraudulent salary payments within government institutions. Speaking during the closing ceremony of the 12 th annual national HRM congress in Mombasa,   the CS said payroll integrity should not be treated as a periodic exercise but as a continuous responsibility aimed at safeguarding public resources and restoring confidence in government systems. Ruku urged HR officers to ensure that every employee appearing in the payroll system can be verified through proper documentation, biometric data and assigned duties. Tenants at the National Housing Estate in Changamwe, Mombasa, have staged demonstrations to protest plans to evict them from houses they claim to have lived in for more than 40 years. The tenants alleged that the National Housing Corporation (NHC) failed to follow the law by issuing only a one-month eviction notice. They also claimed that the corporation did not conduct public participation as required by law before making the decision to evict them. They further said the move would leave them homeless, adding that they felt frustrated and humiliated. One of the residents, Dominic Miguna, said the lives of the affected families and their school-going children would be disrupted if they are forced out of the houses. “The affected houses are 170 units and if you calculate well with five people per family, that is approximately 850 families that will be affected by the eviction,” he said. The Coast region, including the regional capital Mombasa , remained largely peaceful during the nationwide public service vehicle (PSV) strike called to protest rising fuel prices. In a statement sent to newsrooms, Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno said calm prevailed across the six counties of Mombasa, Kwale County , Kilifi County , Tana River County , Lamu County and Taita-Taveta County despite most matatus keeping off the roads. The strike forced hundreds of commuters to either walk to their destinations or return home as transport services remained paralysed in several towns. However, Nuno said police responded to isolated incidents involving sporadic skirmishes and roadblocks reported in Voi , Mtwapa and Shanzu .   Police Officers based at Kayole Police Station in Nairobi have arrested three suspects and recovered a Retay Falcon pistol.   The drama unfolded near Saika stage when alert officers on patrol spotted a motorcycle carrying a rider and two pillion passengers approaching. According to a police report, the suspects upon noticing the police officers, sped off on a motorcycle into Saika Estate, raising immediate suspicion and triggering a swift police pursuit.   “Officers moved in fast and successfully intercepted the motorcycle. According to DCI report posted on facebook, the detectives acted on credible intelligence and stormed a rented house at Kwa Hola Village, where they arrested 42-year-old Mwanaisha Abdalla Gona alongside her accomplice, 37-year-old Nancy Njeri. Police uncovered an exposed and silent but deadly drug den operating right under the noses of unsuspecting residents. “A search led to the recovery of 902 rolls of cannabis sativa neatly wrapped in khaki papers and ready for the streets, weighing approximately 300 kilograms”, the report says. Speaking during the inaugural Geospatial and Real Estate Conference in Mombasa, ISK President Eric Nyadimo called on the government to engage industry experts in amending various laws to help streamline and regulate the sector. Journalists in Mombasa County marked World Press Freedom Day by urging society to respect the profession and recognize its critical role in development. Led by the Media Council Coast Coordinator, Ms. Maureen Mudi, the journalists underscored the vital role the media plays in informing and educating the public, emphasizing its importance in fostering societal growth. Mudi also called on the government to ensure that perpetrators of crimes against  journalists are held accountable. “Journalism is not a crime, and as such, we  should be respected. We have witnessed  cases of attacks against media personnel in the course of their duties,  thereby risking their lives, property,  and livelihoods. This should not be happening today,” she said.
