Mombasa Calm During Nationwide Matatu Strike Over Fuel Hikes


The Coast region, including the regional capital Mombasa, remained largely peaceful during the nationwide public service vehicle (PSV) strike called to protest rising fuel prices.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno said calm prevailed across the six counties of Mombasa, Kwale County, Kilifi County, Tana River County, Lamu County and Taita-Taveta County despite most matatus keeping off the roads.

The strike forced hundreds of commuters to either walk to their destinations or return home as transport services remained paralysed in several towns.

However, Nuno said police responded to isolated incidents involving sporadic skirmishes and roadblocks reported in Voi, Mtwapa and Shanzu. Three suspects were arrested following the Voi incident.

“No incidents of disturbance, destruction of property, or disruption to public order have been reported. Business operations are proceeding normally in all major towns and markets,” Nuno said.

He added that traffic continued to flow freely along major highways, including the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, Mombasa-Malindi Road, Lunga Lunga–Mombasa Road and the Taveta route.

Police also commended residents, business owners, tuk-tuk and boda boda operators, as well as community leaders, for cooperating with authorities and maintaining law and order during the strike.

“We also appreciate the restraint and professionalism exercised by our officers in managing the situation,” he added.

The nationwide PSV strike was called to protest the recent increase in petroleum prices. However, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi dismissed calls for immediate review, saying fuel prices can only be reviewed next month under the existing fuel pricing cycle.

The Parliamentary Liaison Committee is meeting in Mombasa to fast-track key House business as Parliament enters its final year before adjourning for the 2027 General Election. Government Urged to End Abductions Across the Country

Center for Litigation Trust (CFLT) has condemned the recent abduction of Standard group Editor Alex Kiprotich. The  independent Pan-African public interest law center emphasized the need for Journalists to be protected to be able to perform their duties.  The Trust's Executive Director Mr. Julius Ogogoh further demanded the government to issue a public statement rejecting forced dissapearance and abductions.
