Swisscontact Launch PROPEL-A Program in Mombasa

PROPEL-A program that offers industrial apprenticeship training to young Kenyans has officially expanded to Mombasa County.

The program which aims at equipping them with practical skills as a way of tackling unemployment, was launched by Swisscontact. The program was launched in Nairobi four years ago.

Speaking during the launch on Thursday, the company's Head of Programmes, Jimmy Delyon, said under the programme, apprentices spend three weeks each month gaining hands-on experience in different companies and one week in the classroom.

Delyon added that the current cohort comprises 280 apprentices aged between 18 and 25 years with a minimum KCSE grade of D minus.

“PROPEL-A is launching in Mombasa and is creating opportunities for young people who are keen on getting into plumbing and electrical courses. The program has grown to train over 400 apprentices getting them linked with good jobs. This is a good time to expand in Mombasa”, said Delyon.

Meanwhile, Jupiter Energy Solutions Ltd General Manager Carolyne Kanja said the expansion of PROPEL-A to Mombasa marks a major milestone for the programme.

“Some of the skills required to do efficient work, reading of drawings on the site, they are not learnt. So this a solution that is able to help them learn that and also to be able to have soft skills”, she said.

The programme is being implemented in Mombasa in partnership with the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) and Don Bosco Boys Town.

Government Urged to End Abductions Across the Country

Center for Litigation Trust (CFLT) has condemned the recent abduction of Standard group Editor Alex Kiprotich. The  independent Pan-African public interest law center emphasized the need for Journalists to be protected to be able to perform their duties.  The Trust's Executive Director Mr. Julius Ogogoh further demanded the government to issue a public statement rejecting forced dissapearance and abductions.
