Likoni Ferry Traders Cry Foul Over KPA KSh400 Million Project


Small scale traders at the Likoni Ferry area have accused the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) of disregarding their sentiments over the ongoing alternative market construction project at the Customs area in Mombasa.

Speaking on behalf of the business community, chairperson Abdalla Kadi said the project being implemented is different from what was agreed upon with the project committee. 

He claimed the construction is proceeding without consulting or involving their elected leaders.

" Our members are concerned about how they will access the proposed market, who will be in charge", he said.

Hawkers' association chairperson Henry Kiragu said the traders are uncertain about their future once the two-year project is completed. 
" KPA has not told us what will happen to us after the two year period expires.We fear being displaced for good" he stated.

The business community have now urged the Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir to intervene and ensure the traders' concerns are addressed.

' We want Governor Nassir to be here to defend us, otherwise we will think he is among the oppressors', said Mama Kamau, a hawker.

The Kenya Ports Authority is implementing the KSh400 million project to modernize the Likoni Ferry area and improve the operating environment at the busy crossing.

Parliament Liaison Committee Meets in Mombasa to Clear Legislative Backlog

The Parliamentary Liaison Committee is meeting in Mombasa to fast-track key House business as Parliament enters its final year before adjourning for the 2027 General Election. Led by Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss, the lawmakers are seeking to accelerate key legislation, budget matters and committee work ahead of the elections. Boss said the committee is reviewing unfinished business and exploring ways of ensuring that critical matters are completed before Parliament adjourns in June 2027. Government Urged to End Abductions Across the Country

Center for Litigation Trust (CFLT) has condemned the recent abduction of Standard group Editor Alex Kiprotich. The  independent Pan-African public interest law center emphasized the need for Journalists to be protected to be able to perform their duties.  The Trust's Executive Director Mr. Julius Ogogoh further demanded the government to issue a public statement rejecting forced dissapearance and abductions.
