Lamu Locals Back Dangote Refinery, Demand Jobs and Business Opportunities

Residents and leaders in Lamu County have backed Nigerian billionaire businesman Aliko Dangote's proposed oil refinery project, but are demanding firm assurances on job opportunities for locals.

The leaders want the government to guarantee that Lamu residents will receive the lion's share of employment opportunities and be fully involved in every stage of implementing the KSh2.2 trillion project.

Led by Bajuni community Sultan Omar Sharif, the residents insisted that indigenous people of Lamu must benefit from the refinery, which is expected to process up to 700,000 barrels of oil per day.
"Out of those approximately 60,000 jobs, the Lamu indigenes must benefit greatly. This is a very good project which we fully support, and we welcome our brother Aliko Dangote to Lamu," said Sultan Sharif.

The Sultan also urged the investor to undertake Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including the construction of schools, roads and other essential infrastructure to improve the livelihoods of local communities.
Youth leaders Athuman Mohamed Abubakar, Mohamed Twalib and Haula Issa also called on the government to ensure local entrepreneurs are given opportunities to supply construction materials, goods and other services required during the project's implementation.

They argued that prioritizing local businesses would stimulate Lamu's economy and create lasting economic benefits for the host community.
The proposed refinery is expected to be completed within approximately 30 months after construction begins.

Parliament Liaison Committee Meets in Mombasa to Clear Legislative Backlog

The Parliamentary Liaison Committee is meeting in Mombasa to fast-track key House business as Parliament enters its final year before adjourning for the 2027 General Election. Led by Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss, the lawmakers are seeking to accelerate key legislation, budget matters and committee work ahead of the elections. Boss said the committee is reviewing unfinished business and exploring ways of ensuring that critical matters are completed before Parliament adjourns in June 2027. Government Urged to End Abductions Across the Country

Center for Litigation Trust (CFLT) has condemned the recent abduction of Standard group Editor Alex Kiprotich. The  independent Pan-African public interest law center emphasized the need for Journalists to be protected to be able to perform their duties.  The Trust's Executive Director Mr. Julius Ogogoh further demanded the government to issue a public statement rejecting forced dissapearance and abductions.
