Police and Port Reitz Hospital Accused of Negligence in Death of Mombasa Activist


Police and Port Reitz Hospital in Mombasa County have been accused of negligence that allegedly led to the death of a female activist who was stabbed by ex-husband Ainea Namiba in Changawe area.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Coast civil society groups, led by chairman Zedekiah Adika, accused police of ignoring the deceased, Susan Achieng’ Mito, despite the numerous reports she had made at the police station.

Adika said Achieng’s death could have been prevented had officers acted in time to apprehend the suspect.

“ If even police would have taken action or even advised her to move away, she would be alive today. We are going to follow up on the officer who did not carry out their duty professionally’, he said.

On their part, the Mombasa Youth Mothers CBO echoed Adika’s sentiments, accusing Port Reitz Hospital of negligence for failing to provide an ambulance on time and for a medic allegedly ignoring the family’s request for a transfer.

“While we acknowledge the medical care Susan received during hospitalization, we believe there were serious gaps that may have affected her chances of survival. Ambulance services were delayed and ultimately did not materialize, leaving her immobile for prolonged periods,” the group stated.

Terry Mwongeli from the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA) said Susan was a victim of gender-based violence and called on the county government to implement recommendations by the femicide task force formed by William Ruto.

“The report recommended allocating a budget for GBV response. If implemented, it would enable prompt responses to emergency cases,” she added.

Government Urged to End Abductions Across the Country

Center for Litigation Trust (CFLT) has condemned the recent abduction of Standard group Editor Alex Kiprotich.
