Mombasa Private Schools Warn of Dropouts Over Delayed County Bursary

 

Private school principals in Mombasa have raised concerns over unfulfilled bursary promises made by Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.
‎
‎Speaking to journalists at Mama Ngina Waterfront Park, the principals — led by the chairperson of the Private Association for Secondary Schools, Dr. Elisha Mwangu — said the county government had promised to pay KSh 5,000 in school fees for every student in day schools across the county, but the funds have yet to be disbursed.

‎Dr. Mwangu said parents have been visiting schools demanding receipts, claiming the governor had already released the bursary funds, a situation that has created tension between parents and school administrations.
‎


“Let parents know we have not received any money. We can only issue receipts after we get confirmation of payment,” he stated.
‎
‎The principals also lamented that the delay has placed a heavy financial burden on schools and warned that some students risk dropping out if the situation persists.
‎



‎They are now urging Governor Nassir to take immediate action and release the funds to safeguard the students’ education.

Parliament Liaison Committee Meets in Mombasa to Clear Legislative Backlog

The Parliamentary Liaison Committee is meeting in Mombasa to fast-track key House business as Parliament enters its final year before adjourning for the 2027 General Election. Led by Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss, the lawmakers are seeking to accelerate key legislation, budget matters and committee work ahead of the elections. Boss said the committee is reviewing unfinished business and exploring ways of ensuring that critical matters are completed before Parliament adjourns in June 2027. She added that Parliament is also considering whether additional Accounts Committees may be necessary to speed up the scrutiny of government expenditure and clear the existing backlog. “We have been able to align our activities, which is why we meet yearly as a Liaison Committee. Government Urged to End Abductions Across the Country

Center for Litigation Trust (CFLT) has condemned the recent abduction of Standard group Editor Alex Kiprotich. The  independent Pan-African public interest law center emphasized the need for Journalists to be protected to be able to perform their duties.  The Trust's Executive Director Mr. Julius Ogogoh further demanded the government to issue a public statement rejecting forced dissapearance and abductions.
