MOGO Empower Women Bodaboda in Malindi to Boost Income

 


As the world marks International Women’s Day under the theme “Give to Gain,” Mogo, East Africa’s leading vehicle and smartphone financier, in partnership with Abson Motors Limited, has handed over a Haojin motorcycle to a group of women entrepreneurs in Malindi in a move aimed at supporting income generation and advancing financial independence among women.

The initiative forms part of Mogo’s broader efforts to expand economic opportunities for women by improving access to productive assets that enable entrepreneurship and mobility. 

The motorcycle is expected to support the beneficiaries in growing their livelihood activities, including transport services and small-scale logistics, allowing them to reach more customers and increase their daily earnings.

Access to reliable mobility solutions remains a key barrier for many women seeking to scale small businesses, particularly in areas where transport options are limited. 

By supporting women with income-generating tools, the initiative aims to strengthen women-led enterprises and contribute to sustainable community 

livelihoods.

Speaking during the handover, Sheila Nuni, Mogo Community Manager, said the initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to empowering women through practical economic opportunities.

“At Mogo, we believe that empowering women with the right tools can unlock real economic potential within communities.

By supporting women with assets that enable them to earn a living, we are contributing to stronger households, more resilient businesses, and inclusive economic growth,” she said.

A representative from Abson Motors Limited...... said the partnership demonstrates the role mobility can play in expanding economic opportunities for women entrepreneurs.

“At Abson Motors, we believe mobility is a powerful enabler of economic empowerment. Partnering with Mogo to support women entrepreneurs in Malindi reflects our shared commitment to creating opportunities that allow women to grow their businesses and support their families. 

When women are equipped with the right tools, the impact extends beyond individuals to entire communities,” said Fatma Zubedi , Director of Sales & Marketing, Abson Motors Limited.

Several women entrepreneurs who have benefited from Mogo’s financing solutions say access to productive assets such as motorcycles has played an important role in expanding their businesses and creating employment opportunities.

Farnadis Gatwiri, a social worker and businesswoman, said access to financing has enabled her to build a growing transport business while supporting other families.

“Through Mogo financing, I have been able to acquire four motorcycles which are now operated by riders in the community. Each bike supports a family, and seeing that impact has been incredibly rewarding. 

It has helped me grow my business while also creating employment for others.”

Margaret Njeri, a businesswoman who currently operates two motorcycles financed through Mogo, said access to financing has enabled her to challenge traditional perceptions around women and business ownership.

“No business belongs to a man or a woman. What matters is the willingness to work and take opportunities when they come. Through Mogo financing, I have been able to invest in two motorcycles which now generate income and support my household.”


For Mary Mutinda, a cosmetologist, the motorcycle has provided an additional source of income while also improving her mobility and ability to manage her work more efficiently.

“As a cosmetologist, mobility is very important for reaching clients and managing my work. Having access to a motorcycle through financing has made it easier to move around and grow my income.”

According to data from the World Bank, women own nearly 48 percent of micro, small, and medium enterprises in Kenya, one of the highest rates in Africa. Despite this, many women still face barriers in accessing productive assets and financing, highlighting the importance of initiatives that expand access to income-generating tools and financial opportunities.

Government Urged to End Abductions Across the Country

Center for Litigation Trust (CFLT) has condemned the recent abduction of Standard group Editor Alex Kiprotich. The  independent Pan-African public interest law center emphasized the need for Journalists to be protected to be able to perform their duties.  The Trust's Executive Director Mr. Julius Ogogoh further demanded the government to issue a public statement rejecting forced dissapearance and abductions.
